Environmental Priorities

Our Economy and Our Environment

The Port of Seattle is an incredible economic engine for our region, and can – and should – be a catalyst for green job growth in the maritime, aviation, manufacturing, trade and tourism sectors. From investing in shore power and cleaner fuels at the airport and seaport to supporting eco-tourism and helping export bio-diesel around the globe, the Port has a tremendous capacity to drive the green economy in keeping with the values of our community.

There is no question that the maritime, aviation and manufacturing sectors – critical to a strong middle-class in our region – are by and large carbon-intensive industries. I am committed to strengthening these sectors and the good-paying family wage jobs they support while making sound investments to reduce their environmental impact including investing in smart transportation infrastructure, implementing best-in-class stormwater management practices, and reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions. These investments are not only important to the health of our environment, they can help our businesses be more globally competitive by reducing overall costs when implemented effectively.
